Marvel’s Two Instant Sell Outs

In less than a day, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 and both the regular and variant version of New X-Men #20 have sold out at Diamond. As a result of how quickly these issues disappeared from Diamond, Marvel has announced they are going back to press immediately on both with second printing variant covers.

The Other continues to be a huge hit with retailers and fans as Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2, part 4 of the Spider-Man event, is also the fourth consecutive sellout.

The second printing variant cover of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 will follow the same theme as the three that preceded it, featuring a Mike Wieringo Spider-Man in one of his different costumes through the years. This time up it’s the “Bag-Headed Fantastic Four” Spider-Man costume, seen in the sketch provided by Wieringo.

Peter David wrote the first three issues of the Spider-Man: The Other event, which were all quick sellouts, and now Reginald Hudlin is continuing that success as he begins Act Two with an nearly instantaneous sellout.

The other sellout, New X-Men #20, marks a new era for the students of the Xavier Institute, which kicked off in grand style with both the regular and variant cover selling out at Diamond.

“New X-Men #20 redefines the “All-New, All-Different” concept in ways most readers won’t expect,” says editor Mike Marts. “This isn’t a book about learning how to control your mutant powers anymore, it’s a book about learning how to survive.”

Be sure to be on the lookout next week when the second printing variant cover for New X-Men #20 is revealed and be sure to pick up these smoking hot second printing variants when they are released before they’re gone as quickly as they came.

Holidays Come Early for Marvel with Two Tremendous Specials

The Former G.L.A. Return in GLX-Mas Special

Milwaukee’s worst are getting their very own holiday one-shot in the GLX-Mas Special. The team formerly known as the Great Lakes Avengers and the G.L.A. are back and this time, they’re sure to prove they are the absolute worst super-heroes EVER!

“For all of the people who think super heroes suck, and all the people who think that the holidays suck, we proudly present the suckiest super heroes on the suckiest of holidays: the GLX-Mas Special!” says G.L.A. writer Dan Slott. “If, for some strange reason, you LIKED last summer's G.L.A. mini-series, then think of this 48 page one-shot as more of the same, except Christmassier.”

Packed with 6 tales featuring the newly dubbed GLX, the GLX-Mas Special sees writer Dan Slott team-up with a slew of top artists including Matt Haley (G.I. Spy), Georges Jeanty (Gambit), Ty Templeton (Spider-Man/Human Torch), Paul Grist (Jack Staff), Mike Kazaleh (Ren and Stimpy) and there’s an extra-special X-Mas gift courtesy of your Friendly Neighborhood Mike Wieringo!

“And, if THAT doesn't hook you... Well, NOW we've got an X in the title, so you HAVE to buy it,” explains Slott. “Really. Only 198 mutants left. And somehow Squirrel Girl, Flatman, Big Bertha, and Doorman are four of 'em! And, yes, Mr. Immortal is STILL Homo-Supreme, the most highly evolved mutant on Earth! So stick THAT in your Marvel Universe Handbook, continuity-boy! Ho ho ho.”

You just better hope they don’t cancel the holidays after the G.L.X finds some way to mess it up. For merriment and mockery galore, check out the GLX-Mas Special, spinning right out of surprise hit G.L.A.

“Santron,” “A Mole Man’s Christmas,” and More in Marvel Holiday Special 2005

The holidays are almost here and that can mean only one thing: the Marvel Holiday Special 2005 is on its way. Featuring three stories sure to fill your heart with the spirit of the season, the Marvel Holiday Special 2005 is 48 pages of wild and hilarious holiday action.

“The Marvel Holiday Special 2005 is a fun, funny, and holiday-spirited romp through the Marvel Universe!” says editor John Barber. “We really tried to do something different this year by using creators you might not expect to see on a Holiday Special!”

The first story by webcomics great Shaenon Garrity (Narbonic) and legendary cartoonist Roger Langridge (Marvel Monsters: Fin Fang Four and Fred the Clown) is a heart-warmer called a “Mole Man’s Christmas.”

“In this story, Mole Man has abdicated his throne and vanished, and his moloids are kidnapping department-store Santas!” says Barber. “The Fantastic Four are on the case, but it’s Ben Grimm who’s really looking at what’s behind these events.”

The next story by Jeff Parker and Reilly Brown, sees Ultron reprogrammed to think he’s Santa Clause, just in time to ruin the New Avengers’ annual holiday party.

“This one has everybody: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Spider Woman, Black Panther, Yellowjacket, Wasp, Wonder Man, Iron Fist, Dr. Strange, Wong, Aunt May, Mary Jane, Jessica Jones, Gravity, a man-eating Christmas tree…I’m sure I’m forgetting somebody from “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santron!” says editor John Barber.

The final story revisits an old Marvel villain known as the Hurricane as he struggles to come to terms with his adopted home of New York City during the holidays. And it’s brought to you by Mike Carey (Ultimate X-Men/Fantastic Four, Spellbinders) and Mike Perkins (Captain America, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

“This story is written all in verse and drawn so that it looks like a cross between Will Eisner and Gustave Doré,” adds Barber. “It’s funny, poignant, beautiful, and a great way to cap off the Marvel Holiday Special!”

Complete with a new cover by Stuart Immonen (Ultimate X-Men, Nextwave), the Marvel Holiday Special 2005 is THE comic book of this holiday season. And it makes a great stocking stuffer as well.

ZOOM SUIT WRITER/DIRECTOR TO MAKE TV APPEARANCE

Writer, director and former Marvel Entertainment Brand Manager, John Taddeo, and his animated film Zoom Suit, will be featured on the television show The Screening Room. The show was taped Thursday at DW studios in Palm Beach, Florida and will air on Monday, November 14 at 8:00 pm ET on WHDT. Zoom Suit will be the first of five short films screened that evening.

“Being chosen to appear on The Screening Room and sit with Jonathan Crane is an amazing honor for me and Zoom Suit,” said Taddeo. “I guess we must have done something right since the film keeps winning awards and garnering this type of recognition. I’m hoping that all this fanfare will translate into foot traffic at local comic stores when the comic mini-series is released next year.”

The two-hour show is hosted by renowned producer Jonathan Crane. Crane, a Hollywood luminary, has produced some of the largest money earning films in the last decade, including Basic, Swordfish, Face/Off, Phenomenon, The General’s Daughter and Primary Colors. The show will feature a viewing of Zoom Suit followed by an interview with Taddeo and an in-depth commentary on the film and director by Crane.

“I loved it,” proclaimed Crane on the set of The Screening Room after viewing Zoom Suit for the first time. “I am bowled over. I’m stunned. John Taddeo is a budding visionary writer, director and producer.”

To hear more of Jonathan’s comments, tune into The Screening Room with Jonathan Crane on Adelphia Cable channel 17, in West Palm Beach on channel 59, in Naples on channel 23, in Miami on channel 44 and on Boston TV 26.

Ugly Dolls The new IT doll

If there ever was a bigger misnomer I personally have yet to see it. Cute, fuzzy, and incredibly hug-able they are. Ugly they are not. What am I speaking of you may ask. Why I'm speaking of the hottest plush to hit the market The Uglydolls.

Uglydolls where created in 2001 by Sun-Min Kim and David Horvath as pure and simple love letters. Flash forward to today they are the big hit that is sweeping the world.

Uglydolls come in several forms Large and "little" plush, vinyl figures, and keychains. There are also fantastic looking shirts which are seen in VH-1's Best Week Ever.

Good old Icebat (my second favorite) is going to be starring in Zathura hopefully this little guy will not out shine the cast of the movie. But one look into his eyes it will be hard not forget the actors in the movie.

watch for these in Zathura

My personal favorite you may ask is one of the Uglydolls little Uglys

Meet Minimum wage this one here is my favorite. He shall forever have a place next to my monitor on my desk.

Do yourself the favor buy these dolls you will not be disappointed. They are quiet simply the best. Don't forget to order an Uglydog as well they make the perfect companion for your Uglydoll.

A Drug War Carol

"A Drug War Christmas Carol" written by Susan W. Wells and drawn by Scott Bieser, takes the classic story "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens and gives it a new twist.
"A Drug War Christmas Carol" tells the story of ONDCP direct Scrooge McCzar a hard edge man who is fanatical on his stance of keeping drugs illegal. Until one night on Christmas Eve he is met by the ghost of the first "Drug Czar" Harry Anslinger. From there the story goes on where Scrooge meets the Ghost of Christmas Past , Present, and Future.
The story is predominately told by the Ghost of Christmas Past. The narrative of the ghost starts in 1619 Jamestown and takes you up to The Bill Clinton era. The Ghost gives excellent facts which are noted and can be found in the back of the book under the Hypertext notes.
However the Ghost of Christmas Present and Past where somewhat diminished in the story. The future gives a grim detail of Scrooge's outcome.
The story was very informative. All of which backed up with easy to find notes and references.
The art by Scott Bieser ,-3- , Lloyd W. Meek was fantastic.
Overall it was a good read. It is a book I recommend to all despite what your stance on legalization of Marijuana or any type of drug to begin with. Even though this is a one sided view it is still worth the read
I give it a 3 out of 5

ZOOM SUIT, IT'S AWESOME

I just had the chance to view Zoom Suit the short film.
The story begins with the discovery of an alien battle suit in Roswell, New Mexico 1947. Flash forwarding to Present year October 31th. We meet the main players of this story.
Simon Bane an NSA operative who tries to steal the battle suit.
Myles our main character. Who stumbles onto the battle suit.
And Myles friend Brittany.

Upon discovery of the battle suit Myles decides to put it on thinking it is nothing more then a cool looking Halloween costume. With his exclamation of "this is awesome" his journey as the worlds newest superhero begins.
This short film was 9 minutes of delight. Although there are some gaps in the animation, for example in the beginning of the film the farmer has the gun then doesn't then has it again. Despite the gaffes this is a great starting point when it comes to the Zoom comic. Which hits your local comic store in April 2006.
This is a must see and read for all comic fans out there
Highly recommended

Deep Thoughts in Conversations # 2

What is art? Who is art made for? These are the questions brought up in the latest installment of Conversations # 2 by Top Shelf Comix.
This time around James Kochalka of Monkey Vs. Robot fame goes up against Jeffrey Brown creator of the hit book Clumsy (2005).
The best thing about these books shows the passion of not only why these artists create but how the create. Where James prefers free form creativity Jeffrey goes with the thought out plotted style of listening to the audience.
However no matter how you slice no matter what your preference is I think Jeffrey Brown states it the best "The most important thing is that we actually end up making art".
The art style is a split.
James draws himself as his lovable American elf cartoon character which is featured in his Sketchbook Diaries .
And Jeffrey draws his almost surreal simplified version of himself which is featured in his journal book Clumsy.
In the end James states that he is pretty sure "this book sucks" to which I disagree. This is one of the best argument pieces I have read in a good while.
For a price point of $4.95 this book may seem steep for but I assure you it is worth every penny. This is the type of book that should be shown in college level art classes.
Get this book I give it a 5 out of 5

ALIAS COMIC'S EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

In reaction to the lateness and the continued mishandling of certain financial responsibilities, Alias Publisher, Brett Burner, has effectively bought out the partners responsible for these setbacks to instead assume all accounting and production duties internally. In doing so, Alias has gained fundamental control over financial concerns and will now work more efficiently to see a quick turn around of publishing responsibilities. Additionally, certain editorial changes have been made which are designed to lessen production costs, there by increasing the profit potential of each Alias title.

"The problem was that these individuals were acting on their own judgment, making crucial decisions irregardless of our input," said Burner. "We are not, however, looking for a scapegoat. Alias assumes complete responsibility for the late shipping of books which over the past few months has affected the trust of our readership and retailers. Once we recognized the problem, we immediately began a process of removing those responsible, as well as pruning projects that were a financial drain, either by alteration or elimination, which has sadly resulted in the loss of some of our titles; though no studio has moved on without being offered the option to stay undermore equitable terms. Unfortunately, these steps take time and require adegree of silence- which to some can be, and has been, misinterpreted as non-action on our part. We apologize for that confusion, and we hope that fans will now understand the situation we were placed in, and why things happened the way they did.

"Burner hastened to add as well that he still maintains a good relationshipwith his former partners.

While a few creators have parted from the Alias line, the majority has chosen to stay the course, demonstrating their unyielding faith and support for the publisher.

"I have worked with two other publishers - both of which ended up being very unsatisfactory experiences. Because of this, I planned to release SUPERTEEN*TOPIA on my own. But after talking to Alias, their enthusiasm for the project won me over. To date my experience with Alias has been great and, to be very honest, my editor and I have very high expectations in regards to what we consider 'professional behavior'. I think SUPER TEEN*TOPIA has found a great home at Alias," said Alias creator, Kirk Kushin ("SuperTeen*Topia").

Alias writer, Ryan Scott Ottney ("The Legend of Isis"), has been hired as Alias' Communications Coordinator to prepare all internal and external communications, as well as media relations and other matters of communications.

The Communications Coordinator is an administrative position, designed to keep the media and the readers informed on current Alias updates. "We want people to know about all the great things we're doing," said Ottney, "but also in the event of any mishap-even as small as a late shipping book-you're going to hear about that, too. We can't expect people to buy our books if they can't trust us. We've lost some readers because of that already, but we believe we can win them back."

These new changes are only the first in a series of major announcements soonto be released by Alias Comics in the coming weeks and months designed to establish a new direction and a renewed chance at success.

Mike S. Miller, Executive Director and partner, chimed in with this,

"It hasbeen difficult enduring the public speculation about Alias without correcting the matter, but it has been worth it as we've finally gotten Alias back on track and are heading in the direction we should have been going all along. I think patience has paid off better than any amount of bickering ever would have, and that's an important lesson learned from all of this."

It's also extremely important to note that with this move by Burner, Alias has reached another milestone: that of financial independence. Alias Comics is now running completely on generated income, a feat most of the failed comic publishers to whom Alias has so often been compared have never managed to accomplish.

"Is Alias going anywhere?" asked Miller. "Yes, second star to the right, and straight on 'till morning!"

Dealing with Decimation in Generation M #1

The repercussions of the House of M have left an entire generation to cope with the horrifying future that now awaits them…a group known as Generation M.

In Generation M #1, a group of former mutants must now deal with life without powers. One reporter wants to share this group’s stories with the world, but a sinister force is attempting to ensure that these former mutants and their stories are silenced forever.

“Generation M isn’t your normal comic book,” says editor Nick Lowe. “It deals with the decimating effects of House of M in a very real, human way. For a lot of these characters, their power was their life. Now that that’s gone, what do they do? This is my favorite Paul Jenkins’ writing since Inhumans and Ramon Bachs is doing the best work of his career. Don’t miss this!”

Paul Jenkins and Ramon Bachs take us on a tour of the post-House of M Marvel Universe and what lies ahead for many of these characters we have all known and loved for years. Be sure to pick up Generation M #1 to see how these mutants have gone from Homo-Superior to the absolute depths of humanity

What If? Returns For Another Fifth Week Event

Thanks to the overwhelming success of last year’s What If? event, Marvel is bringing it back this December with all new one-shots featuring your favorite Marvel characters including Captain America, The Fantastic Four, Thor, Wolverine, Daredevil, and the Sub-Mariner.

December’s What If? event kicks off with What If: Captain America, which sees a different Captain America origin for Union Army Captain Steve Rogers. Through mystical intervention and a strange twist of fate, Rogers is transformed into Captain America to help change the tide of the Civil War. Unfortunately, a similar twist of fate also happened to empower his greatest enemy: the White Skull.

See what would have happened if Steve Rogers became Captain America during the Civil War instead of World War II. You think you know Captain America but this is Captain America like you have never seen him before. Just check out these preview pages for proof.

Traditionally, each What If? tale took place in its own universe. But for the first time, this year’s 6 What If? one-shots will all take place in the same universe: the newly introduced Earth 717.

TEAM BEHIND HALO ARMOR BUILDS ZOOM SUIT

Nightmare Armor Studios, the team responsible for the creation of the real life Master Chief Armor from the video game Halo, has built a life sized replica of the alien suit featured in the award-winning animated short and soon-to-be comic, Zoom Suit.

The creation of the Zoom Suit took master sculptor Sid Garrand and six artists and craftsmen approximately ninety days. The complexity and high tech aspect of the costume, such as the moving parts and numerous lights, made the task even more challenging.

“I think it’s exciting and very original,” said Garrand. “We’re excited to deliver the best armored Zoom Suit possible. We came up with some very cool concepts for the costume. The suit has chrome plating on numerous parts, candy apple green and blue automotive painted parts and green LEDs to match the alien glow featured in the comic and animation. It’s awesome and we’re thrilled to be the group chosen to bring the Zoom Suit to life. We received a tremendous amount of attention from our work with Microsoft and expect a similar reaction to the Zoom Suit. This project is by far the highest quality of work we’ve ever done.”

The award-winning animated short Zoom Suit, created by John Taddeo, can be seen online at http://www.superverse.com/. The Zoom Suit comic book will be solicited in the February edition of Previews for items shipping in April 2006.

“I saw the Master Chief Armor at MegaCon last year and knew instantly that Nightmare Armor Studios were the guys for this job,” said Zoom Suit writer and director John Taddeo. “This is a work of art. Sid and the guys did a great job. We’ll be bringing Zoom with us to MegaCon 2006, so stop by for a photo.”

The Traitor Makes his move in Ultimates 2 # 9

The Ultimates have a traitor in their midst, the team has been systematically pulled apart, and now the traitor is readying to bring the hammer down in Ultimates 2 #9

“The master plan of the traitor deep within the heart of the Ultimates comes to startling fruition!” says editor Ralph Macchio. “The Triskelion is under massive attack and this may be the defining moment for Nick Fury’s superhuman defense initiative! Don’t miss it!”

Even after the revelation of the traitor last issue, Tony “Iron Man” Stark and Natasha “Black Widow” Romanov are still hearing wedding bells. Will they manage to sneak in a little matrimony before engaging in the fight of their lives?
