Veteran Comics Creators Join Narwain's Creative Ranks

Narwain continues to close deals with some of the top creative talents in the U.S. comic industry. Dick Giordano, Dave Simons, Brian Augustyn and Tom Mandrake are the latest creators enlisted to bring exciting new comics to the worldwide audience.

"Narwain already had a roster to be proud of with such names as Jimmy Palmiotti, Bill Tucci, Takeshi Miyazawa, Wayne Robinson, Rick Leonardi, Joe Rubinstein," said publisher Mr. Mauro Di Pede. "Adding amazing veteran creators like Dick Giordano, Dave Simons, Brian Augustyn and Tom Mandrake, allows me to confidently declare that Narwain's staff is ramped up and ready to produce a tremendous output of high-quality comics for the readers."
DC Comics staples Dick Giordano and Joe Rubinstein join writer Dario Maria Gulli ("Wall After Wall") on the one-shot graphic novel "Hollywood Noir". Hollywood's horror movies provide the backdrop to this story of murder, obsession and sex in a corrupt Los Angeles.

"Liz" is a three-issue miniseries by longtime artist Dave Simons who has drawn everything from "Spider-Man" to "Howard the Duck" to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to "Courage the Cowardly Dog". He and writer Philip Osbourne ("Jenna") tell the story of a charming, sensitive woman who runs a paranormal investigation agency…that is when she's not paying the bills with her night job as a stripper. "Liz" is a horror book with more twists than an M Night Shyamalan movie.

Writer Brian Augustyn ("The Flash", "Crimson") and artist Tom Mandrake ("JSA", "The Forest King") are hard at work on "Un-Human", a six-issue mini-series. In this sci-fi action story Andrew Cassidy discovers that he isn't the man he thought he is. In fact, he might not be human at all.

"We've been working hard to demonstrate our commitment to bringing quality books to an international audience. The vote of confidence from these creative teams tells us we are doing something right," Di Pede continued. "I do hope readers will continue supporting us. Narwain aims to stay true to its motto: 'readers' satisfaction is our mission'. Hopefully other important writers and pencilers will be inspired to join our family.... and our mission to create great books."

Dark Horse helps support our troops with

Dark Horse Comics has lent its logo to be used as part of special military unit coin. These coins are particular to each unit and are used as identifiers, given out as kudos, and are collected and traded by servicemen. Per a special request from the Third Battalion Fifth Marines stationed in Fallujah, Iraq, the trademark Dark Horse horse head logo has been integrated into the coin for their unit, nicknamed “Dark Horse”. Dark Horse is honored to lend its support to these brave servicemen overseas.

I'll post a picture of the coin when I get one that can be posted. From what I have seen it looks great.

What If? Month Transforms Fantastic Four and the Sub-Mariner

The madcap mania that is December’s What If? event continues to roll as both the Fantastic Four and the Sub-Mariner get the What If? treatment in What If: Fantastic Four and What If: Sub-Mariner.

The original Fantastic Four origin story from way back in Fantastic Four #1 had Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny rocketing into space prematurely in an attempt to beat the Russians. Writer Mike Carey and artist Marshall Rogers explore in What If: Fantastic Four what may have occurred if Reed had been a Russian cosmonaut instead.

“What I loved about writing this book was the ability to play with historical events and to drop the Fantastic Four (or a possible Fantastic Four) into the crucible of the Cold War, like some kind of weird chemical catalyst, and see what would happen,” says writer Mike Carey.

Instead of the world having the Fantastic Four, they are replaced by the UFFF, the Ultimate Federalist Freedom Fighters; and their greatest battles were not fought in the Negative Zone or Latveria, but against the powers that attempted to keep them in check. Geography isn’t the only change. Reed Richards is joined by three other Marvel heroes to form this new UFFF: Colossus, Magik, and Black Widow.

“It's always seemed to me that the What If? books hone in on a character and situation and how far each of them can ever determine the other,” says Carey. “What we've got here is a Reed Richards shaped by different politics and ideology, but ultimately - I think recognizably - still the truly exceptional human being that he is in the regular Marvel universe. Everything else in the book flows from that idea.”

The Sub-Mariner would have also lived a completely different life had his environment been different. In What If: Sub-Mariner, Ten Terrific writer Greg Pak and artist David Lopez explore what would have happened if Namor grew up with his father on land and how that would have changed the events of World War II and the world after.

“Namor is the ruler of Atlantis — but his father was a surface-dwelling human,” explains editor Mark Paniccia. “We’re using our What If? story to explore Namor’s human heritage, to imagine how his life and the course of history would have changed if he had been raised by his father on land rather than his mother in the sea.”

In the main Marvel Universe, Namor became an Invader during World War II, assisting the Allies in order to protect his underwater subjects from the Nazis. However, what side would this Namor have joined if the Atlanteans asked for his aid, knowing that his hatred towards Atlantis for the death of his mother?

Witness how the outcomes of two different wars, World War II and the Cold War, could have changed drastically by a simple twist of fate in What If: Fantastic Four and What If: Sub-Mariner.

Both Covers of X-Men Deadly Genesis #1 Sell Out

Both versions of X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1 have sold out at Diamond as Decimation continues to ravage the Marvel Universe. The Marc Silvestri Giant-Size X-Men #1 homage cover and the Joe Quesada villain variant have both sold out of significant overprintings.

Marvel is going back to press immediately on X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1, a shocking combination of horror and super-heroics by Wizard Top Ten Creators Ed Brubaker and Trevor Hairsine. The all-new variant cover will be penciled by Hairsine and feature a very menacing Wolverine, as seen in the sketch provided.

"I couldn't be more overwhelmed, honestly," said writer Ed Brubaker. "To get the chance to write such a big project for Marvel in the first place was so out of this world, but to have the first issue of my highest selling project ever sell-out right away like this, it's almost more than I can wrap my head around. I'm... I'm tempted to go to Disneyland.
But I have too many deadlines."

Fans and critics alike have been heaping tons of praise on the first issue of this X-Men ghost-story/mystery.

“With dead-on writing and locked-in art, X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1 is one of Decimation’s must-reads,” said Dexter K. Flowers of Brokenfrontier.com.

“Take Brubaker’s strong opening chapter combined with the amazing art of Trevor Hairsine, and this issue has a real blockbuster feel to it,” said Comicfanatic.com.

Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada is already heralding the series as an “instant classic” and it is sure to be mentioned in the same breath as the plethora of classic X-Men tales. X-Men: Deadly Genesis is going to rock the foundation of the X-Men Universe for years to come so don’t miss out on the second offering of this bone-chilling first issue.

Its Uncanny: Fans to Choose Claremont’s Next X-Project

In a bold and exciting move, Marvel is giving its fans the chance to determine what Chris Claremont’s next X-project will be.

“We’re putting this in the hands of the fans and we couldn’t be more excited about the possibilities,” says editor Mark Paniccia. “These four options all sound cool enough to support their own mini-series but only one can win. Chris and I are on the edge of our seats!”

By voting on Marvel.com, fans will have a chance to determine what 6-issue X-Men mini-series Claremont will tackle after X-Men: The End.

“X-Men fans are some of the most vocal out there,” says Paniccia. “We’re taking advantage of that voice and putting them in the driver’s seat. By next week, we’ll have a new X-Men book in the works from one of the industry’s most influential authors.”

All four of the possible title choices take place outside of current continuity, including stories from previously visited alternate universes as well as an entirely new X-Men universe.

And the four choices are:

Days of Future Past – This series would pick up the moment after Kitty Pryde sent Rachel Grey into the past from the original story. The world is under the rule of Sentinels, most mutants are either killed or in camps, and only a strange alliance of outlaws stand a chance at changing this dark future.

Asgardian War Stories – During the Asgardian War, the X-Men, Alpha Flight, and the New Mutants all fought alongside the Norse Gods. But what would have happened if they never returned to Earth and stayed in Asgard?

NEXT – Witness today’s generation of X-Men if the Marvel Universe aged in real-time. Both the first and second teams of X-Men are approaching 50 and the New Mutants are now in their thirties. This series will follow this new generation of X-Men and the new reality they find themselves in.

What If? X-Men - Continuing from 2004’s What If Magneto and Professor X Had Formed the X-Men Together?, this series would be a re-imagining of the X-Men in contemporary times from an entirely all-new perspective. Because of Magneto helping found the X-Men, not only has the history of the X-Men changed, but that of the entire world. Every character’s life and future is up for grabs here.

It’s up to you to decide what legendary X-Men tale Chris Claremont will pen next. Visit www.Marvel.com and let your voice be heard for which of these X-stories you would like to see.

Will You Still Love me If I Wet The Bed

Will You Still Love Me If I Wet The Bed is a delightful little graphic novel by Liz Prince. The story revolves around Liz Prince and her boyfriend Kevin.
I personally have grown to love Journal Comics. It is to me a breath of fresh air from the hundreds of super hero books that are out there today. Instead of giving us an elaborate storyline. You have the very simple story of a "Day in the life" of these characters. And that is what Liz Prince successfully does in this book. She takes quirky moments and shares them with the world.
The art is a simple cartoon style drawing which is very similar to James Kochalka of Monkey vs Robot fame or even Jeffery Brown of Clumsy. Both available at the topshelf comix's website. The art really gives the book an innocence that shows the world here I am be nice.
There is no need to be nice to this book. It is quiet simply an excellent peice of work. This is no more a book then it is a valentine to her boyfriend Kevin.
For that I give this book a 4 out of 5. I would have given this book a perfect rating if the price point was not so high for such a quick read. But I assure you it is well worth it.

X-23 Shows Up For School in New X-Men #21

After the startling events from last issue where most of the Xavier Institute’s students were rendered powerless, the New X-Men must now face a threat from one of the X-Men’s deadliest villains in New X-Men #21. And if that wasn’t enough, the loose-cannon killer X-23 shows up for school.

William Stryker detests mutants and after the mass depowering of mutants following the events of the House of M, he sees this as a sign from God. Now is his chance to purge the rest of the mutants from the Earth and he plans on starting with the students of the Xavier Institute.

The kids find themselves at their most vulnerable and the combination of Stryker, infighting amongst the team, and the addition of the wildcard X-23 may finally be enough to end school forever in New X-Men #21.

The FF’s souls are on the line in Marvel Knights 4 #25

Magic rears its ugly head in the Fantastic Four’s neighborhood leading many of the FF’s magical friends and foes to come out of the woodwork in Marvel Knights 4 #25.

It’s the beginning of a whole new arc of the occult with an all-new penciler joining the title in Mizuki Sakakibara.

"With 'The Resurrection of Nicholas Scratch,' I'm getting to bring back some of my favorite classic characters from the FF mythos,” says Ten Terrific writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “Agatha Harkness, the witch who used to be Franklin's nanny and was seemingly dead; her insane son, the warlock Nicholas Scratch; and the mutant-witches Salem's Seven... Not to mention Dr. Strange and, in Parts Two and Three of the three-part arc, Diablo.”

When the order of the physical world and the neather-realms become unbalanced, a dark storm comes out that threatens all of existence. This sacred balance is thrown out of whack when the Salem’s Seven attempt to resurrect their father, the warlock Nicholas Scratch.

“It's a lot of mayhem and magic,” promises Aguirre-Sacasa, “Which is, of course, one of the few realms the FF haven't yet conquered. Lots of fun, action, and cool horror."

The Fantastic Four have triumphed over incredible odds many times before, but how will they react when its their souls on the line in Marvel Knights 4 #25?

Santa Showdown in Punisher: Silent Night

Its nearly Christmas time and everyone is getting into the spirit of the holidays. Everyone except Frank Castle, The Punisher, that is.

In Punisher: Silent Night, the Punisher doesn’t spend the weeks leading up to Christmas buying presents. No, Castle is more interested in tracking down a mob rat in the witness protection agency and giving him a “holey” night, if you catch the drift.

But it’s never that easy, is it? In order to get to this mob rat, Frank is going to have to face a foe unlike any other he has faced before.

He’s fat, dressed in red, has a white beard, and is looking to cross the Punisher off of his list. Its sure to be the showdown of the season with plenty of Yule-time holiday fun in Punisher: Silent Night.

ALIAS SIGNS EXCLUSIVE WITH DIAMOND

Alias Comics, publishers of such popular titles as SIXGUN SAMURAI, 10th MUSE, and LULLABY, have recently signed an exclusive distribution deal with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. that will not only supply comic shops with the publisher’s titles, but also bookstores across the country!

“There were several reasons we signed with them,” said Alias publisher, Brett Burner, “but mostly because the deal fits best with our model of a company. They’re working hard for us, and are going to help push our trades into the book market.”

Diamond will also be taking on the burden of order fulfillment, among other functions, and therefore less labor and warehousing space will be required on the part of Alias.

“This will help us focus on other, more important things,” added Burner, “and that IS to the greatest benefit of our studios.”

Another great advantage is that Diamond can help place Alias trades and graphic novels into bookstores everywhere, greatly expanding their exposure and sales. Currently, Diamond trade paperback and graphic novel solicitations for the book market run two months further out than the regular comics. As a result of this, Alias will push all currently expected releases of graphic novels and trades to coincide with bookstore releases over the summer of 2006 - beginning in May.

“It is a shame to have to do this with our October-December books, but it is a one-time setback whose result will be better overall sales for each title, therefore better circulation,” said Burner.

Below is a tentative release schedule for when Alias TPBs and GNs could start appearing in bookstores everywhere.

Generation M’s Bachs Signs Marvel Exclusive

Ramon Bachs, the upcoming artist on the Generation M mini-series, has recently signed an exclusive contract with Marvel.

His first new assignment as a Marvel exclusive will be taking over the art chores on The Pulse alongside fellow Generation M creator Paul Jenkins to become the new creative team when the title goes monthly with issue #15.

When asked about why he chose to sign an exclusive with Marvel, Bachs said, “I just thought it was the right choice. The conditions Marvel offered me were very good, and the possibility of having the chance to work with Paul Jenkins for a long time finally convinced me. I have been wanting to work with him for awhile.”

Bachs has worked at several other publishers, including DC and Dark Horse, and is making his first foray into the Marvel Universe with Generation M. Now he will have several years to play around in Marvel’s sandbox thanks to his newly signed exclusive contract.

“Ramon’s work over at the Distinguished Competition established that he is amazingly adept at creating a realistic environment and conveying emotion,” says Nick Lowe, Bachs’s editor on Generation M.

“Since Generation M is a book all about the ramifications of the massive mutant power-loss and the emotional journeys that these former-mutants embark on, Ramon jumped out as the perfect artist for it,” says Lowe. “He makes you feel what these people are feeling in a very real way. I cannot express how glad I am to have Ramon on this project.”

Bachs is sure to impress with his stunning portrayal of depowered mutants in Generation M and starting with The Pulse #15, he and Paul Jenkins will shift the focus to reporter Sally Floyd from Generation M, as they take that book in a daring new direction!

Hellboy artist chosen!

Dark Horse is pleased to announce that Duncan Fegredo will be the artist on the new 2006 Hellboy miniseries, Darkness Calls. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola will provide story and covers. Darkness Calls is the direct follow-up to 2005’s The Island and will take Hellboy on to the next big chapter in his life.

“Like Guy Davis, and unlike me, Duncan can draw anything,” commented Mike Mignola. “He can draw the real world, he can capture the mystery and the atmosphere that the book needs—but he’s also a fantastic cartoonist, so he can keep the life and the humor that I try to get in my stuff. I’ve always loved his stuff. He’s a f*****g genius.”

“A few years back I was asked in an interview about dream jobs . . . Hellboy, I said, no hesitation,” enthused Duncan Fegredo. “But I thought I wouldn’t want to do it because I only want to see Mike Mignola draw it. Fast forward a few years, Scott Allie calls with an offer to make a liar of me. So I’m damned, so what? With Hellboy Mike Mignola has created his own singular language in comics and it’s both a privilege and pleasure to be invited to collaborate. I think the term I’m looking for is ‘gobsmacked.’ Yes, that’ll do it.”

Hellboy: Darkness Calls is a six-issue miniseries beginning September 6, 2006. Check darkhorse.com and hellboy.com for updates and additional information throughout the new year.

“LOST” CO-CREATOR DAMON LINDELOF BREAKS NEW GROUND WITH MARVEL AS MARVEL UNVEILS PODCASTS!

The Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk 6-issue miniseries is set to hit stands December 21, but excitement about the project is reaching red-hot intensity, due to the incredible popularity of the characters and creators involved! Damon Lindelof, co-creator and executive producer of the hit television series Lost, is teamed with superstar Marvel exclusive artist Leinil Yu to bring readers what promises to be one of the most intense meetings of any two characters in Marvel’s history. Recently Damon stopped by to talk to members of the web press and fans alike about the series, working in comics, and working on Lost. Don’t worry if you weren’t a part of that call, because now you can be! Marvel is pleased to announce the unveiling of our very own podcasts! First up, the call with Damon!

Podcasting at Marvel.com enables fans to be a proverbial fly on the wall as they listen to creators talk about all of the aspects of what goes into making a comic book. In the near future, there will be many more uses for this innovative technology that is gaining popularity every day on the web. In joining the podcast revolution, Marvel hopes to bring fans closer to their favorite creators, update fans on exciting upcoming projects, and release news that podcast listeners will literally be the first to hear! We thought the best project and special guest to unveil this new development at Marvel.com would be Damon Lindelof, and he was thrilled to be a part of it.

Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk marks Lindelof’s first comic book writing effort. He will bring his storytelling magic to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe in a high-octane tale that echoes the classic first appearance of Wolverine (from Incredible Hulk #181). Dr. Bruce Banner (a.k.a. the Hulk) has been presumed dead since his execution following a murderous rampage through Manhattan. But when reports start cropping up of an unidentified creature appearing around the globe, General Nick Fury – head of America’s premiere intelligence organization, S.H.I.E.L.D – begins to get worried. Not because Banner can turn from man to unstoppable monster in seconds, but because Banner’s existence is the one secret that can bring down Fury. So Fury turns to the only man he can trust: the mysterious man known as Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine of the X-Men, to take care of Banner – by any means necessary.

JUDO GIRL FLIES SOLO AGAIN IN APRIL

Judo Girl returns in 2006 with an all-new mini-series at Alias Comics!
Coming April 2006, JUDO GIRL returns to Blue Water Productions and Alias Comics with an all-new mini-series by writer Johnny Lowe and artist Alex Julian.

In this new mini-series, the villainous Hep Cat is back! He and Judo Girl had a kinda-almost-sorta-maybe relationship long-ago, but while Judo Girl has emerged into the 21st century still in her early 20s, Hep Cat is now in his 60s! How will this new age gap affect these two lost lovers, and can Hep Cat and Judo Girl ever really be together?

“Judo Girl generally has an upbeat, positive personality, and so will make plenty of humorous remarks during her encounters with the bad guys, though it'll be somewhat less than in the first mini-series,” said writer, Johnny Lowe of his take on the characters.

Also expect an appearance by Atlas, and the return of the Judo Girl villain, Silencer – who first appeared in THE LEGEND OF ISIS #5!

“Silencer is a good adversary for Judo Girl as she too is obviously trained in many fighting techniques,” said Lowe. “Of course, Silencer doesn't speak except in rare moments, so Judo Girl will try and take up the slack in the repartee … which might annoy and anger Silencer even more!”

Joining Lowe on this series is artist, Alex Julian, who tells of his artistic influences, and what fans can expect to find in April!

“I looked at [artists like] J. Scott Campbell and Roger Cruz, for the sexy judo girl look, and added a lot of my style to it,” said Julian. “[Managing Editor] Darren Davis really pushed me to give the book a cutting-edge by bringing the characters out of the panel and making objects look like they’re flying out at you.”
The all-new JUDO GIRL mini-series will be available in April 2006!
