Rising Stars Shine on "Forgotten Planet"

Anthologies are back and Narwain's got 'em. Following the tradition of our flagship title "Brian Yuzna's Horrorama" comes the science fiction collection "Tales from a Forgotten Planet" and the second issue features a lineup of comics' rising stars.

Comics creators such as Andy Kuhn ("Firebreather"), Christopher E. Long ("X-Men Unlimited"), Shannon Eric Denton ("Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi") and Rob Worley ("Advent Rising: Rock the Planet") present a line up of stories that evoke everything from "Tales to Astonish" to "Twilight Zone" and "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Andy Kuhn and Rob Worley, who last teamed on Marvel's "Young Ancient One", have crafted a tale of city-stomping havoc in "Crunch Time".

"We're both big fans of Jack Kirby's monsters," said Worley. "Let's just say this story play's to some of Andy's strengths."

Adds Kuhn, "It's always an awesome time when I get to draw big monsters crushing the hell out of stuff!"

Things go from smashzilla to sublime with Christopher E. Long's thought provoking tale "Intelligent Design."

"I find it fascinating that themes echoed in the works of Isaac Asimov, Charles Beaumont, and Rod Sterling from the '40s and '50s are issues being addressed today in the scientific community," said Long who wowed readers with last year's "Easy Way" series. "My story pays homage to these masters of sci-fi."

Shannon Eric Denton, who recently scored raves in Entertainment Weekly's review of "Common Foe", pens a generations-spanning story that's as heartfelt as it is epic in "Flying."

"As a boy, my father, a Naval aviator, picked up some of the returning astronauts and ever since greeting them on their return I've been fascinated with what lies beyond," said Denton. "I think it's great Narwain is embracing sci-fi and giving readers new worlds to wonder about."

Narwain veterans Moreno Burattini, Tomás Morón, Luca Panciroli and Jesus Barony join the foursome on what is certain to be a breakout issue.

"Tales from a Forgotten Planet #2" is 48 black and white pages and retails for $6.49 USD. You'll find it on page 298 of the January Diamond Previews catalog.

Zoom Suit Gets Southern Fried and Heads to Vegas!

ZOOM SUIT GETS SOUTHERN FRIED AND HEADS TO VEGAS!

Award-Winning Animated Short Set to Appear at the Southern Fried Flicks Film Fest and Compete at the MoTV Awards at Mandalay Bay Hotel

The New Year starts off with a bang for the award-winning animated short, Zoom Suit, as it is scheduled to appear in the Southern Fried Flicks Film Festival on January 10 at the Imperial Theater in Augusta, Georgia airing at 6:00 pm and will then compete in the 2006 MoTV Awards held during the National Association of Television Production Executives (NATPE) meeting on January 23 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.

The second annual Southern Fried Flicks Film Fest showcases Southern independent films with a special emphasis on local and regional films. Southern Fried Flicks was developed to inspire, encourage and support films and filmmaking in the South.

With the worldwide demand for mobile content exploding and nearly 2 billion mobile phone users actually watching television on their cell phones, the first annual MoTV Awards is searching for the next big mobile hit show through the work of independent creators. Held at NATPE, the leading event for educating and making deals with global television producers and marketers at their annual summit, the audience for the awards will be comprised of top tier press, television, and mobile/wireless execs, and content creators, acquirers and carriers/distributors.

“We love the attention, but we’re afraid the comic book may be allocated” said Zoom Suit creator John Taddeo. “We wanted preview copies for retailers, so we printed the book based upon a best guess in late November. With the increased exposure, it appears that estimate was woefully low. If you want a copy of Zoom Suit, please reserve one at your local comic shop as soon as possible.”

The award-winning animated short Zoom Suit, created by John Taddeo, can be seen online at www.superverse.com. The Zoom Suit comic book will be solicited under Superverse in the February edition of Previews for items shipping in April 2006.

MARVEL ENLISTS SUPERSTAR ARTIST TO JOIN THE RANKS OF THE WOLVERINE: ORIGINS ARMY!

The hits just keep a'comin' concerning Marvel Comics' newest ongoing series OLVERINE: ORIGINS as the industry leader announces that superstar artist Michael Turner will be delivering an extra-special variant cover for the inaugural issue. This stunning cover will be Turner's first published work for Marvel since the company announced his coming in the summer.

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS joins the present WOLVERINE title on the stands and further illuminates the dark recesses of mutant super-hero Logan's shady and exciting history. The new series will be written by Daniel Way and drawn by Steve Dillon, the creative team behind BULLSEYE: GREATEST HITS, PUNISHER VS BULLSEYE, and SUPREME POWER: NIGHTHAWK. Issue #1 will jump off from the cliffhanging ending of March's WOLVERINE #40, also written by Way.

"This cover was a blast to draw!" enthuses artist Michael Turner on his variant to the standard edition cover to WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #1, drawn by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada (who'll be handling ongoing cover chores for the series). "I studied the classic character and drew several layouts only to go back to the very first layout sketched," explains Turner. "I had also just seen ?King Kong' so the primal rage I tried to express with this piece was still on my mind. That's all the credit I'm taking because Peter's Steigerwald colors knocked this one over the fence! His visceral textures and color choices blew me away!!!"

Turner is unabashedly excited about this particular gig. "I am really looking forward to drawing Wolvie again sometime soon..."

Fans will find both the Turner cover and the Quesada cover to WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #1 at their local comic shop in April. Retailers note: this will be a 50/50 variant cover split. Stay tuned for more WOLVERINE: ORIGINS news-as well as some exciting Michael Turner news!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER LAUNCHES COMICS IN THE CLASSROOM WEBSITE

Canadian elementary school teacher, Scott Tingley, has started a website designed to help fellow teachers and parents choose comics for both eager and reluctant readers K through 8.

Tingley, a parent, teacher and a longtime fan of the comics medium, is an early years teacher in the New Brunswick (Canada) public school system and the creator of Comics in the Classroom (www.comicsintheclassroom.net). His goal with Comics in the Classroom is to share the positive experience that he’s found using comics to help in the learning process.

“I am hoping that my knowledge of differentiated learning and my love of comics will help Comics in the Classroom visitors in the motivating and teaching of the children in your lives,” said Tingley.
Tingley’s selections run the gamut from Bob McLeod’s Superhero ABC to the older skewing Zoom Suit, aimed squarely at the PSP and X-Box 360 crowd. Along with these two, selections include Marvel Entertainment’s Franklin Richards, Lions, Tigers and Bears by Mike Bullock and the perennial seller, Jeff Smith’s Bone. These and other selections are currently featured on the CITC homepage. Some choices such as Superhero ABCs are simple. Others such as Lions, Tigers and Bears (an Image comic) or Zoom Suit may not be as obvious. Tingley explains, “The goal of the site is to get kids to read. Comics that have a film, television or video game look such as Lions, Tigers and Bears and Zoom Suit are great gateway books for reluctant readers.”

Tingley expects the site to grow at a rapid pace. “I may be new and small, but I am one of the few sites of this type,” he said. “The response has been very strong, but we are always looking to recommend publications that we believe are a good fit. But space is filling up. Creators or publishers that would like their books reviewed should send review copies as early as possible.”

Tingley’s next goal is to find a sponsor to help him spread the word. He plans to offer advertising space sometime during 2006. Parties interested in submitting review copies or sponsorship opportunities should contact Scott Tingley at comicsintheclassroom@gmail.com.

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON RESURFACES AGAIN!

DH Press is proud to announce the newest addition to its original Universal Monsters novel series, Creature from the Black Lagoon: Time’s Black Lagoon. Following in the footsteps of previous DH Press original novels featuring Dracula and Wolf Man, the Creature has been revamped with a modern horror sensibility by noted sci-fi author Paul Di Filippo and is set in the year 2015. This book will be released in May 2006 at a retail price of $6.99 (ISBN-1-59582-033-7).

In 1954, an expedition found what seemed to be a missing link in the evolutionary chain: an ancient, immensely powerful amphibian Creature. Scientists tried to tame it, break its will, and even change its very being with surgery and torture, but the beast rebelled, killing nearly all in its way. But was the creature truly a throwback, a freak survivor of some prehistoric era, or was it something more?

Six decades later, one scientist attempts to find out, using a time machine to journey into the past. What he finds not only shatters his vision of what the Creature might be, but could change the history of the human race forever.

Turning the conventions of what we feel we know about the Creature on its ear, critically-praised science fiction author Di Filippo reinvents the classic monster with a tale of time travel, horror, and mystery that blends Cold War science fiction with today’s cutting edge cyberpunk in a vision of what terrors still lurk in the swamp.

“Di Filippo is like gourmet potato chips to me,” said Harlan Ellison, famed science-fiction writer. “I can never eat just one of his short stories.”
